DIY Coloring Learning Game: Upper / Lower Case Vowels Match

<<

A fun coloring activity and game ideas to teach uppercase and lowercase vowels to preschool level kids.

Resources

Directions

01. Print a copy of printable A.

02. Ask your kid what is their favorite word with each vowel. You can help them by reminding them about the names of animals, cartoon characters, family members/friends that you already know that they like and that they are used to hear/say them often.

03. Ask the kid to draw and color a picture in each letter’s flashcard representing the words that they have chosen, trying to make the picture big enough so when you cut the cards in half there is enough “chunk” of their picture in both parts.

*IMPORTANT* Before the kid starts drawing the pictures, explain to them that after they finish making them, the cards will be cut in half so they can play with a puzzle that they’ve made themselves. Failing to do this might result in the kid resenting you for “destroying” their art without their permission and maybe they won’t even want to play anymore ☹️.

04. After your kid decides that the pictures are ready, cut them out of the page and then cut each in half.

05. Play matching those pics, which can be done in different ways depending on each child’s likes and skills, you can either:

  • Hide all the pieces around the room to make it a scavenger hunt / puzzle game.
  • Scramble all the pictures on the floor/table and let the kid find their own way to match them.
  • Put either the uppercase or lowercase parts in the right order (a-e-i-o-u) and let the kid find their match.

Game twists

  • Glue a magnet in the back of their designs so they can play on a metallic surface like the fridge.
  • Mount the pictures on cardboard and use them to play an alternative version of the classic memory game, where instead of looking to match two pictures of the same kind, they have to find the letter’s uppercase/lowercase match.
