Modern DIY Father’s Day Card Idea that Suits All Kinds of Dads (even single moms)

pin-diy-modern-fathers-day-card-for-diverse-kinds-of-dads-inclusive-idea-for-i-love-you-daddy-gift

Because not all Dads look the same.

I’ve seen many ideas for Father’s Day cards that are based on the traditional father figure, but in my opinion, these kinds of old school fathers are not what all kids are seeing in their homes today.

I thought it could be nice for those kids to give them the option to make a gift that resembles more the father figure that they see every day in their lives. Whatever that is (or isn’t).

I was raised by both my Mom and my Dad, so I can’t imagine how awkward it is for, let’s say, kids of single Moms that never see their Dad, to be encouraged at school to make a card that says “I love you Daddy” and features some kind of “cartoony mustache” or a men’s shirt with a tie.

This idea was designed to suit all kinds of different father figures that exist nowadays. No matter how diverse!

Let’s celebrate an inclusive Father’s day! 🙂

(Video) Modern Father’s Day Card

Here’s a super-speed video of only a couple of examples of the many different combinations that could be done with this idea:

Like and share this video on Facebook! 🙂

How to Make the Card:

1. Download the Free Printable from the link at the bottom of this page (it comes in English and Spanish)

The PDF has “adult and baby” illustrations of these animals: Seahorse, Lion, Bird, Cat, Turtle, Snake, Fish and Sheep.

2. Let the kids choose and cut out one Adult animal that for them feels more like their father figure, then let them choose and cut out two copies of the Kid animal that they feel could represent themselves.

* IMPORTANT * It doesn’t necessarily have to be the same kind of animal for the adult and the kid in the card. Adoptive parents and Dads that acquired parenthood by love and commitment are also legitimate father figures, even if they don’t physically look like their children.

3. Fold a sheet of paper in half and in the outside paste one copy of the baby animal. Then paste the adult animal and the other baby animal in the inside part of the card.

4. Add your own message or use the one included in the printable (available in Spanish and English).

Idea twists:

Extra customization: Add to the drawing any extra features that will make the animal look even more like your father figure. Freckles? Earring? a Tattoo maybe? (if someone did this for me, I bet they would add rabbit teeth and thick eyebrows to the animal, haha!)

Pop-up effect: To easily make any part of the drawing pop-up when the card is opened, do the following:

  1. Cut a small rectangle out of paper (about 10cm x 3cm should be fine).
  2. Bend it back and forward in a zig-zag shape, like a little accordion.
  3. Tape or glue one end of the accordion to the card. Then fold it and on the other end paste the part of the drawing that you want to stand out. That’s it!

Here’s a video of my super-speedy hands making the examples for this game:

Instructions:

1. Download the Free Printable from the link at the bottom of this page (it comes in English and Spanish)

2. Complete each animal in a crafty way by playing with your creativity and any random materials that you find around.

Unleash your creativity!

Experiment with odd materials that don’t look like art supplies at all. That brings a richer experience for the player because it gives more satisfaction to them knowing they “discovered” a new way of using something. Who doesn’t love that feeling?

🐦💬 Everyone kept saying: “YOU WILL NEVER GET WINGS!” And for a long sad time, I believed them 😣 then one day it finally came to me… After binge-listening to success stories about feather-less birds that made it (like the naked bird you see if you SWIPE LEFT), I knew I had to find my own kind of wings no matter how unusual or “un-bird likely” they were. So I went into the recycling bin, I grabbed an old paper bag, cut it, painted it blue like my favourite kind of worms and LOOK AT ME NOW! I am the birdest bird in the bird land 💙😎 . . Has anyone ever told you that you are not good enough? What have you done about it? Comment to inspire others! . . . PS: I made this bird for @bestideasforkids

DIY Addition Machine – A fun way to learn addition

A nice teacher from Mexico sent me this video where he used the Animal Numbers to make an “addition Machine” (Máquina de sumar, in Spanish).

He used two painted toilet rolls and taped them to a shoe box.

Above each of the toilet rolls he placed one of the free number flash-cards to indicate how many pom-pons the student should introduce. Then the child only needs to count the total number of pom-pons in the box to know the answer.

Another teacher from a Facebook group commented that the machine could be improved by placing a “+” symbol between the flash-cards.

If you make anything with this free numbers printable, please consider sending me your video to be featured in my Facebook Page so other teachers can get inspired by your idea.

Animals Chess Set for Kids | Free Printable Chessboard and Animal Chess Pieces

Free printable boardgame: Animals Chess for Kids by Kids activities designer Rodrigo Macias

Chess tournaments have been very popular during down-time at the summer camps where I’ve worked.

Nevertheless, the limited amount of chessboards available at the camps were always a problem. There were very few of them and sometimes incomplete (Carlitos don’t eat that pawn! …too late).

I made this Animals Chess hoping to give those “chessful” kids, counselors and parents a cheap but cool solution to easily print and build a chess set.

Chess gives a good work out to the mind, it is very entertaining and it is great for bonding quietly with kids ?.

Have fun!

(Video) How to build a Paper Animal Chess

** Spanish subtitles available **

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Get your PDF Chess from the Download link at the bottom of this page.
  2. Cut out the pieces and Chessboard.
  3. To put together the pieces:
    1. Bend your cut-outs where you see the vertical lines.
    2. Glue and paste the flap on the right that has the 3 dots (Want a faster yet less appealing method? Instead of a gluestick or other glue, you can use tape).
  4. To put together the board:
    1. Layout together the 4 pieces of the board in the right position using the stone border as a guide.
    2. Flip your 4-pieces layout so you can tape them nicely from behind. Either using little bits of tape or doing 2 long stripes like big “+” sign.

You’re ready to play chess!

Pieces comparison:

Pieces guide for the Free printable boardgame: Animals Chess for Kids by Kids activities designer Rodrigo Macias

Pawn – Monkey: Because they are tiny and big in number.

Rook – Elephant: So the kids can relate its’ weight with the heaviness of a solid tower.

Knight – Zebra: So the kids can easily make the relation with the traditional Knight (horse-shaped) chess piece.

Bishop – Snake: The design was based on a Black Mamba because of the way it moves, and also because I’m a fan of Tarantino’s Kill Bill ?.

King – Lion: By popular demand (I wonder why!).

Queen – Giraffe: This was the second choice by popular demand, but I thought it was better than a female Lioness to show the kids that there is no problem at all with mixing races in couples.

Making of story: Free Animals Chess (Design Process)

Design story of the Animals Chess

<<

A quick tour of the design process for the Animals Kids Chess by rmacias.

Thinking about the times at summer camp were we wanted to play chess with the kids but there were no chessboards available, the idea was conceptualised:

The first thing made was the board, using textures and a grassy brush.

Close up Chessboard corner of Free printable boardgame: Animals Chess for Kids by Kids activities designer Rodrigo Macias

Then I got too excited and made a public statement on Facebook that I would learn to design on 3D to make this Chess.

A public Facebook statement wher eI commit to learn how to use a 3d software to make the pieces for the animals chess for kids
Click the screenshot to see the original Facebook post

Then I sketched the pieces’ front and side views. That’s when it started getting scary for me (I thought “Is this too complicated for a first 3D project? What have I done!”).

Then little by little from a mix of procrastination and Youtube tutorials the pieces started to take shape.

Then paper dummies were made to figure out the simplest 3d-like solution that could be printed in any 2-d printer:

Then at the border of “When is this project going to end! ?” the printables were put in place.

Then I made a video tutorial showing how to build a free chess set at home.

In total, from concept to publishing the project took about 8 weeks.
